Making the Move

I've learned a lot living and working just outside of Detroit, MI while shooting for Moosejaw Mountaineering over the last year or so. It's been quite the learning experience and culture shock for a guy who has spent 31 of his 32 years amongst the pine trees of Northern California and the beaches of Southern California.

I came out here to measure myself and see a small slice of what the commercial photography industry is all about. I've learned from a number of people who have been gracious enough to share information and techniques that were foreign to me. I also learned that I already knew a lot about the industry.

The overall goal for my move to Michigan was to take a chance and sacrifice my location and my family and friends to learn a new side of photography. I'm passionate about telling visual stories and am willing to sacrifice a lot of my personal comfort and familiarity to move forward in the photography world.

The corporate side of photography is such a valuable skill to learn. It teaches you everything you need to know about how to approach and deal with that type of client. It doesn't take long to understand that we as picture makers have to teach the client the value of what we do. It takes a lot of moving parts to make "bigger" productions work well and view well. I learned that I can actively participate in most, if not all of those moving parts but it doesn't necessarily make sense to do them all at the same time.

I look at the last year as paid tuition. It was probably one of the most valuable photography experiences of my life. I hope I can take all that I've learned and pursue the projects and companies that will benefit from my experience, passion and overall approach. I take every experience for what it is, an experience and a life lesson. Nothing is ever written in stone and I can't wait to see what the future holds.

As of January 1st I will be based out of Bend, Oregon

I am looking to provide visual marketing imagery both still and motion for corporate companies, local businesses and people who are passionate about what they do.

For larger scale productions I have a vast network of producers, location scouts, photographers, videographers, writers, musicians, editors, models, athletes and assistants throughout the country.

Please contact me for any details and I will gladly make myself available.
