Angela Van Wiemeersch: The Desert by Brett Holman

Working with folks who pursue their dreams is pretty cool. It reminds me to stay on track with what's important in my own life. Angela Van Wiemeersch is one of those folks. She's pretty damn good at everything she does and is willing to work hard no matter what the situation is. She says what's on her mind, wants to make great photos and is absolutely hilarious. I can never pronounce her last name and she uses the word "stoked" way more passionately than me which is well deserved because she gets after it. "No Weak Shit" is one of her mottosHer "other life" involves adventure in the mountains and usually incorporates a shady plane ride and ice axes in some exotic location. Here's a few images I made with Angela outside of Las Vegas while she was working to fund her trip to Nepal.

First Week in Seattle by Brett Holman

It's been a great first week in Seattle. Liz has been taking me to some cool spots and I started exploring a little bit on my own. Navigating and driving the van in the city isn't the easiest but maybe it's because I'm used to being in Idaho. I'm getting used to the reality of rain and when the sun pops out it's pure bliss. I'm loving the vibe here. The people are kind, the opportunity seems good and it's a new backdrop for picture making. I've always wanted to live in Seattle and it feels great to finally be doing it. As usual, I'm most happy when there is excitement in the air and you never know exactly what's going to happen.

Idaho and Beyond by Brett Holman

It's been a while to say the least! I've been living in Stanley, Idaho and working for the United States Forest Service since June 15th. It's been a busy summer shooting photos and video, and I promise I will update my site with recent imagery when the time allows. Internet is only available at the Stanley library and I really wanted to spend my time here in the outdoors shooting what I love.

In other news I just completed my Leave No Trace trainer course and am happy to help teach outdoor ethics and principles to help reduce our impact in the world around us. Also, I will be documenting the life of Wilderness Ranger, Katy Nelson in the heart of the Sawtooth Wilderness during her upcoming 5-day hitch. The following week I will be joining the fine folks at Moosejaw for the upcoming catalog shoot in Red Rocks, Nevada before returning to Idaho for another month. From there I will be joining the wonderful Liz Stuart in Seattle, Washington.

Be well, tread lightly, leave no trace and smile a ton!

Relax and Reset by Brett Holman

The end of each day marks a certain significance for me. It's a reflection on what's occurred and what's behind me. It's also a shift on how to move forward and make adjustments towards a better tomorrow.  It's a time when I make decisions towards my goals and passions. It's a time when I find contentment in the present. I've always been a thinker and it's a time when I think about everything. The end of each day is special because at that moment, you get to relax and reset for the next step with a certain calmness and sense of peace.

Around Town by Brett Holman

Quentin Ortiz caught my eye this week. He was providing some beats to the local beach crowd on his cajon drum. It's always cool to see people like Ortiz doing what they love to do. Thanks for the soundtrack "Q"!

A napping juggling unicyclist also made me pull out my camera this week. Ocean Beach is such a unique blend of people, from street performers to young families. Everybody fits in in "OB" and it's one of the many reasons I love this beach town.

Van Life with Chad by Brett Holman

I met Chad, a surfer and photographer on Sunset Cliffs yesterday. It's always great to stumble into someone who is living simply and enjoying each day. Originally from Ohio, Chad's been enjoying the Ocean Beach lifestyle ever since he came out to San Diego in 2011. Fresh out of the water from a morning surf, we talked about how the photography industry has changed over the years.

Social media and online marketing are crucial components to being successful now days. When I started in the business 10 years ago you couldn't share your work with the world nearly as easily. The renowned Jimmy Chin recently wrote a great piece about starting a photography business and what's necessary to start and stay in the game. I think he hits the nail on the head with how the business is shifting. " You can’t just rely on luck, good timing and talent to build a career or business." Check it out at http://blog.jimmychin.com/2014/04/how-to-start-your-photography-business-for-under-3000/

Today's Shot - Where's the Sportsmobile? by Brett Holman

I encourage you to look deep into this picture and find the Sportsmobile camouflaged in this golden setting. One of the best parts about living on the coast is running into fellow travelers with their personalized travel rigs. From the backyard specials to the highly accessorized Sportsmobiles like this one, they all have style and the spirit of adventure written into their DNA. Travel by air has its place but when I really want to be in control of my own adventure, I get in my van, fill up the gas tank and hit the road.
